I'm thinking about ditching my 10TB archive volume which is shared via CIFS and going with a VM file server running windows server 2008 R2 and RDM the a 10TB device extend instead using iSCSI. I can never seem to get Samba to do what I want in regards to permissions. This is in a domain environment if that matters. Would this be a bad idea?

Thanks!

No idea. That's where being an admin plays a role. It's up to you to figure out what the best choices are for your situation. I don't trust any large amounts of data to non-ZFS storage because of bitrot and the probabilities of having it.

I've also moved this to off-topic since its not a question regarding sharing in FreeNAS itself.
