Hi All,

I'm going to swap out the motherboard of my Freenas box soon to give me more memory expansion options and more Sata ports.

I think that it should be a very simple job, just swap the board, reboot and everything SHOULD be as before, but I just want to check, apart from making sure I have an up to date config backup, is there anything else I should do beforehand or anything I need to be aware of before I do this?

Many Thanks

Paul

As long as it's supported hardware by FreeBSD, you shouldn't have a problem. You will need to reconfigure the NIC from the console once it boots.

Well, you may need to reconfigure the NIC. If you'd configured a static IP address on the old board, and if the new board requires a different NIC driver (resulting in a different device name for the NIC), then you'll need to reconfigure it.

Well, you were both right, the process went very smoothly (I did have to reconfigure the NIC) - at first. Turned out my motherboard was compatible but not very reliable as it kept causing Sata errors and drives kept dropping out :-(

Back to the old motherboard again while I consider my options and read those hardware guides again.

Thanks all.
