Hey Everyone,

I'm very very new to FreeNAS, in fact I haven't even used it yet. I'm currently using Unraid for my NAS on a HP Proliant Micro Server.

I chose unraid mainly because it was the first one I herd off and it allows party drives. I'm not worried about redundancy as I have back ups on spare hdds.

The question I have is , if I install FreeNas on my microserver on a HDD will I be able to just add my current hdd with all my data to a pool in Freenas or will I have to reformat and start all over again?

Also is possible to do the same style with FreeNas aswell as unraid (have all drives appear as one but not in a raid 0 style)

Thanks for any replies!! and I hope to be on here more often

You will have to format the disks and start again, restoring from your backup.

For your second question, go check Cyberjock's sticky presentation at the top of this forum (no, really - do it or you'll regret it later)

I know what you mean - I built a second NAS to do the backups to, and last time I had to it took a solid couple of days for the initial full backup. Tedious!

Unraid and ZFS use pretty different methods: one thing you really need to pick up from the presentation above is how different ZFS is for adding more space to. It ain't the same.
