changing drives connection - sata ports (sw issue?)

hello,
i have currently running setup with 8 drives on freenas 9, 5xr1 and 3x single drives.
is it possible to reconnect these drives to different sata ports -ie if i mix the cables? for example drive on sata0 will be connected to sata1 port and so on...
is that a safe operation?

Yes, you can reconnect the drives to different ports. The system uses the dev ID to determine what's what.
