I’m new to FreeNAS so please forgive my ignorance.

I recently came into possession of a Dell PowerEdge SC 430 and though it would be the perfect opportunity for me to build the FreeNAS I always wanted to. I have installed v8.3.0 to a USB thumb drive without issue; however FreeNAS does not see the two internal HDDs. I have confirmed the system sees them in the bios and that FreeNAS acknowledges them while loading on the console. My leading theory is that FreeNAS needs a kernel model; some google’ing has me believe I need ata_piix. Can anyone corroborate my theory? Or am I way off? Additionally my attempts the scp the kernel onto my FreeNAS have failed, can anyone provide some step by step instructions on how to copy a kernel and install on FreeNAS?

You will have to recompile the kernel. There is some How-To's on how to compile it. If you know what driver you need I recommend you put in a ticket at support.freenas.org. If there is a driver out there that will work with your controller the developers should be able to add this easily.

Also make sure your BIOS controller is not in RAID mode. That can cause problems.

Cheers!
