Hardware specifications, FreeNAS version, exact error message and some permission/dataset ownership information needs to be included if you want help. This is all in the rules for making a post.

Now i go to start on my main computer and typed \\$_Not_a_private_LAN_IP
Woah, that's an internet address, not a LAN address. What are you trying to do, exactly?

Maybe the OP's guests include the Russian Mafia. :-(

Whatever happened to @RussianMafia anyway? Get rubbed out by a rival gang?
Capitalist conspiracy, he'd say for sure. You'd think he'd show up more often, though. But one does wonder what happened - Extrajudicial killings do seem to be a typical mafia activity.

Reviewed the posts the other day, in all seriousness, and they're worth a laugh. Just show it to vaguely-knowledgeble friends and they'll laugh along. Obligatory xkcd: https://xkcd.com/686/ - well, it's not very appropriate, but the "the shell" / "ze shell" / "zshell" pun is a good one. Closest xkcd I could remember off the top of my head, anyway. Kinda difficult to keep track of all xkcd comics by now.

Wow. The smb share is still public facing and anyone can get to it.

Now I just need to get his password figured out. Guess I should fire up some toys and start cracking at it...

And here I naïvely thought that it'd be behind a firewall. Guess I stopped reading after the internet address.

Internet address has been removed from public view, not that it'll do much in the grand scheme of things.

@AdrianCicek, though we're having some fun at your expense, the point being made is serious--you've exposed your SMB share(s) to the Internet without any kind of firewall or other protection. This is very dangerous, not only to your data, but also to the security of your system. FreeNAS is designed to operate on a protected network behind a firewall. I'd recommend not only that you firewall the system, but also that you do a clean reinstallation of the system. If you need to access your SMB shares or other data remotely, look into a VPN solution to do so safely.

I'm amazed that people actually figure out how to do this kind of stuff. Every home router has a firewall and most people have no clue how to even use it. But this guy has figured out how to open up everything! where is that fail thread so we can add this one to it. Not to mention that this thread is about not having access yet everyone else can access it except him.
