Hi everyone !

Started using FreeNAS 9.10 STABLE on my "old" gaming PC.
Wonderful experience so far.

Thanks for all the hard work done on it.

Yes FreeNAS is great. It solved a lot of problems for me. The hard work the dev team has put into it is very much appreciated.

A word of caution though... if you want your data you may want to read what several of the masters have said here in the forums about using consumer hardware and not using ECC ram. I'm fairly certain your old gaming rig doesn't support ECC.

Good luck.

An old gaming rig is not a good choice for Freenas. Gaming rigs use cheap parts.

Oh really ???
Didn't thought of that when I used it as an EXPERIMENT.
This is supposed to be a presentation thread right ?

So the expected answers are :
- Welcome
- If you need advice/help, don't hesitate !

People just throwing their "knowledge" are in fact not welcome.

And I mounted that gaming rig myself. It's "old", it's not premium, but it has always worked very well (15 000 hours+)
Actually I used it to test pretty much everything (like Xpenology, which is way easier to use and configure)

@CaMaraton

The comment @SweetAndLow made was not an attack on you, he was simply stating that your hardware is not proper for FreeNAS. He is correct that gaming rigs use cheap parts. Heck, my main computer uses cheap parts (they were not cheap financially) compared to server quality components. I also believe you only have 4GB RAM when FreeNAS clearly requires 8GB RAM so you are quite likely to have some odd issues which may be due to low RAM, not that it's not ECC. This is not an attack, it's advice. If you really want to use 4GB RAM then you should consider using FreeNAS 8.1 as I will run on 4GB RAM. It's not the latest and greatist but if all you need is a NAS, this will do it.

This is supposed to be a presentation thread right ?
I don't understand what you mean but this thread is and Introduction Thread, a place to say Hello.

So take a deep breath and understand that of the postings I've seen with you included, you are the only one so far spreading discontent. Hopefully you have taken a step back, took a deep breath and are doing good now.

And lastly, I hope you enjoy your time here at FreeNAS Forums, we all do our best as volunteers to help out.

Cheers!

Last time I checked, the point of this forum is to share knowledge and experience.

Not following advice is your business, but hostility against advice is, in fact, not welcome here.

This thread went the wrong way. Gaming parts are not "cheap". Some are, in fact, very expensive and very high quality. Like all things, not everything that is expensive is good, either. That is different from whether a particular computer is well-suited to use for FreeNAS.

The first thing that should be said in any of these threads is a thank you to new users. It takes some effort to set up your own system, and we appreciate that you have done so with FreeNAS. @CaMaraton, thank you for doing that. For most of us, it's easy to forget that effort and skip to making recommendations about doing it even better.

Long-time forum residents and FreeNAS users, please remember your first success with FreeNAS. It might have been easy, it might have been hard, but try not to take that victory away from others. We are all here to support each other. After 2016, and with 2017 upon us, we each need all the support we can get.
