Hello guys!
First of all, thanks to developers and to community, these kind of projects need many energy to become true!

I want to build a NAS based on this OS, and the doubts are mainly related to the HW needed.
Okay, but what do you want from this NAS?
  • First of all, secure family data (photos, videos, memories, documents) in order to avoid a premature divorce...
  • Secure family data (photos, videos, memories, documents) to avoid divorce.
  • Avoid divorce by securing family records.
  • Create a personal cloud: make content accessible via Android apps (such as Dropbox, MEGA, and similar).
  • Deposit laptop backups (made through Veeam).
  • The ability to RAID disks of different sizes (such as Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR)).
  • Sometimes streaming media files on TV: hey is a NAS to keep your data safe, the less you turn it on, the better is!
  • 4 bays
  • hot swap
Dreaming:
  • Host VM.
  • 6 bays
Limitations:
  • Physical space in the home.
  • I must use 3.5 "discs (cheaper).
  • Noise: to avoid divorce.

What did I think of?
An HPE ProLiant MicroServer GEN10 X3216 with 8GB RAM: quite compact and reliable. 5 drives supported.
At this case : because is quite small. But I don't know what mobo and CPU I need to complete this build!

I am looking for advices, critics and experiences from others!

Thanks
Seek

No.

FreeNAS shouldn't really be turned off. You will need more RAM to run something like Plex with OK performance.

Nextcloud (but consider more RAM)

Fine
Not with 8GB of RAM.

Securing should include a backup strategy. FreeNAS is not a replacement for a backup. If your house burns down or you bork your FreeNAS system and cause data loss you'll want those backups.

I know the better choiche is a cloud storage.

  • Deposit laptop backups (made through Veeam).
The data on the NAS will be a redundant copy of the family cloud devices

You'd be better served by using a hypervisor. Installing Proxmox on said system would allow you to create multiple VMs etc. I have one and I run NextCloud as a VM, Syncthing (for backup) and a bunch of other services as LXC containers. My Nextcloud VM runs with 1 GB of RAM. All LXC containers run with 512MB RAM. 8GB RAM will be fine if you keep the number of services/VMs to a minimum. Granted that my data still sits on a FreeNAS box. But you don't have to have 2 boxes. You can use the Proxmox local storage for your data. Proxmox also supports ZFS so it will be similar to FreeNAS. You can add a NFS or SMB share if you want as well.

If you plan to run a lot of VMs/containers, it might be a good idea to upgrade to 16GB RAM at least.

Look at Node804 which is a great mATX case. It doesn't have hot-swap though, which you indicated is not a requirement. mATX will also allow for future expansion rather than a mini-ITX which is limited in expansion options.
