Build issues, help me debug?

Build is going OK, except for 2 things

  1. Should SFF-8087 -> 4xSATA cables get hot?? They're thin cables, and get really hot:

  2. I have 9x 3.5" drives and trying to power them via RM1000x power supply. Whenever I go to 8 drives or more powered at once, the MBD-X11SCH-LN4F-O won't power on (LEDPWR won't start). It starts happily when 7 or less drives powered. This doesn't seem right, it's a powerful supply? Any ideas?

Thanks all :)

9 * 0.54A = 4.86A 5V
9 * 2.08A = 18.72A 12V

That's ridiculously inside the power specs of the supply right?

I just can't see what would be stopping the power supply from supporting the drives, unless the power supply is bad?

That, coupled with the description of low power you end up with, does not sound right.

All the energy turned to heat must be provided by the power supply. As such, if it says it is not powerful enough to go up to 8 or 9 drives, that means its power is used for something else, like heating the place with these wired.

So No, a cable should never end up hot. A cable is meant to conduct power without resistance. To heat, it means that it turned to a resistance somehow. It can be the cable, the connector, the connection, but something somewhere is creating electrical resistance where it should not.

Thanks Heracles! Your confirmation has helped narrow down to these cables being really dodgy...

  • 1 cable was getting stupid hot, so I removed it entirely. System still has boot problems
  • Remove ALL the breakout cables. System boots
  • Insert breakout cables one at a time into various drives. System will fail to boot when just 1 of the SATA connectors, from 1 single breakout cable plugged into different drives (to eliminate the drive being problematic).
  • Yet attaching that same drive with a traditional 1:1 SATA cable, system boots fine

I no longer trust these cables whatsoever.

Can anyone link a really reputable SFF-8087 -> 4xSATA cable that I should get instead?

I used this kind, last time I bought those, and liked them much better than the thin ones I bought before:

I found the thin cables to be easily damaged.
