Just wanted to check with everyone for any issues on the following build I have planned. Ive read the 2016 hardware guide and have done as much diligence as I can, so think I'm good to go.. just wanted to check for any issues I may have missed.

Purpose: this is a Freenas server for my home, only me using it. Plex, some jails, probably experiment with VMs in the future. Basically I want a server with enough power to grow as my knowledge and curiosity does over the coming years.

MOBO: Supermicro MBD-X11SSM-F-O
CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1240 v5
RAM: Samsung 2133mhz 16GB ECC DDR4 UDIMM (M391A2K43BB1-CPB)

comes to a total of about $500 with discounts.

the rest of the stuff I already have laying around:

HDDs: six HGST 4TBs for Raidz2 (4x2)
PSU: I already have a spare a spare Corsair ax86Oi PSU, until I need to use that in a different build I will probably just use it for this. Its complete overkill, but its just gathering dust right now.
CASE: spare fractal design r4

I'm pretty confident this is all ok, but just wanted to double check. Only thing I'm not so sure about is 16gb or 32gb of RAM?. the Samsung is $100 per stick.

Thanks!

Just start with a 16GB stick. You can add one at a time then up to 64GB.

You could save a few $ by getting the E3-1230v5 instead. Only 3% slower and 10% cheaper.

thanks, I couldn't find the E3 1230 V5 on the site I was getting a discount (1240 was going to be 260 after discount) but after some digging I did find the 1230 for $235.. so that saved me $25.

Thanks, I forgot to mention. From reading on here I believe the SanDisk Cruzer FIT CZ33 32GB is recommended?

Or 16GB. whichever floats your boat

After doing some digging it seems the newer version is cheaper, the SanDisk Ultra Fit CZ43, and its USB 3.0.

Is it still recommended to use USB 2.0 for freenas? I'm sure I read that 9.10 addressed the previous USB 3.0 issues.

USB3 works fine. Some say USB3 drives run hotter and are thus prone to failure. Especially with teensy Fits.

I haven't seen it personally. Yet.

thanks again. I keep regular backups of my freenas config files anyway so will just go with the newer drive.
