I was following along here -
https://forums.freenas.org/index.ph...freenas-on-a-32bit-proc-with-low-memory.3606/

I am not settings up a FreeNAS system for storage just yet, merely playing around with configurations and possibilities. When it comes time to deploy it will be on a much larger system.

However, i found that editing /boot/loader.conf had no effect on vmem.kmem_size, vfs.zfs.arc_max, or the others.

also, I noticed someone else talking about needing to re mount /boot as readonly, which I did not need to do, and that tells me the post i found may be out of date. Any other recommendations for freenas on low memory?

That post is most definitely outdated. The minimum for FreeNAS is 8 GB no getting around it.

Yes. Don't.

Don't try to shoehorn FreeNAS into roles it wasn't designed for.
