Best way to connect remotely and securely via windows machine?

What is the best way to connect securely and remotely to my FreeNas box? I have enabled SSH and connect via SFTP using expandrive, it seems to work well but hangs a lot with larger transfers (even when local) . Any better options other than expandrive and SFTP?

VPN is a good option.

could use OpenVPN , or create an SSH tunnel...I would much prefer the OpenVPN solution

I use winscp. I like the way I can right-click on a server in winscp and select 'open in putty'.
