You're missing the point. I'm talking about non critical data on a budget.

... and non-critical data on a budget pretty much means "I don't need ZFS" so you could argue that FreeNAS isn't even something you should be using. It's like using a nuclear bomb to take out an anthill. "I just wanted the anthill gone" and it is definitely gone. But you could have done it for far less and with better tools.

Sorry to disappoint TXAG26 but I do not keep a list. I have far better things to do than waste my time on stuff like that. Although many names stick out in my head and when they pop in later I recognize the name. Photographic memory FTW.

Well when I'm looking at a software with the express purpose of data protection and redundancy I sort of kind of use those features and not actively work against them.

If you are using FreeNAS without ECC you are completely and utterly defeating the purpose of even using FreeNAS in the first place, if you don't want ECC, you don't want FreeNAS.

Either meet the minimum system requirements, or find a software that actually fits your needs rather than attempt futilely to wrangle with one that doesn't

Well I'll be getting an ECC setup when I can afford it. When it comes to technology I love trying new things out and I'm so far impressed with freenas. My main focus was on low power consumption, so I've got a brand new Bay Trail celeron board and 8GB Kingston DDR3L matched pair (also brand new) for little over £100. These will be used for an HTPC when I get an ECC setup. If my zpool fails I'm quite happy to post on here and have the piss ripped out of me for losing my media files. It'll be next year before I can afford some new ECC kit though, so I'll see what happens over the coming few months of regular scrubs.
