I'm just starting out with a brand new FreeBSD installation and am trying to install my first jail under the latest release. I see options to install FreeBSD 11.2 or 11.3. I chose 11.3 and then found I was unable to start it. Am I missing something?

The jail version must match the underlying FreeNAS version, so unless you are running the 11.3 beta train then, no, it's not going to work. I hope that helps.

FreeNAS 11.2 release is based on FreeBSD 11.2. You can't run a jail on a newer release than the base system so you'll have to use 11.2 for your jails until FreeNAS is updated.

So, if/when FreeNAS gets updated to 11.3, is there a way to automatically update all jails to 11.3?

This is a UI bug of FreeNAS. It should not allow you to select something that can't work. You can create a ticket here: https://jira.ixsystems.com
