Hi all,

I run pfsense, which is also based off BSD. It has a nifty backup config option. I can download a file from the machine that contains all the settings in my config. In the event the box blows up I can simply rebuild, and upload my config and BAM! I'm back in business.

Does FreeNAS have a feature like this?

I can tell you haven't read the manual...

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: The manual explains it all.

ermahgawd! sucha halpfol post. numinated for bestest halpir of da yeer awerdz!!!!!!

I love RTFM posts. They're the most useless peice of crap posts on the internet. You're assuming I didnt read the manual. Which I did. It mentions it in one single sentence, rather than a full section for which something so important should probably have. So sorry for missing that single sentence, that mention only in passing under the "upgrade" section. Very descriptive. Thanks!

For future reference, when referring someone to the documentation, how about referring them to a section in the documentation.

Hope that little peice of information allows you to actually contribute in the future. These sorts of posts are the reason why open source projects never become mainstream.

http://doc.freenas.org/index.php/Settings "Save Config". It's a database file. The "upload config" button will let you upload one and the restart the box for the uploaded config to take effect. Config files are usually compatible with future but not past FreeNAS installs.

This really is all there is to say about it.

Thanks so much! I did eventually find it after re-digging through the manual, which I swear I did read upon intallation ;)

I'd give you the section, but I actually wanted you to read the manual. Not skim through, but read and understand. It's better for you and your data to have a firm understand of what FreeNAS does and doesn't offer. Sorry if you don't like the truth, but it hurts. There's a reason why so many threads are left unanswered. Too many people haven't read the manual and understand.

Another useless post. Awesome. Once again you're contributing to why most open source projects fail.

First and foremost you're not a figure of authority for which I have to do what you want. Lets get that straightened out right now. What you want is irrelevant to everyone on the internet.

Secondly, for now the SECOND time in this thread you're assuming I didnt read the documentation. Which I stated I did! I read it quite thoroughly and recently when setting up LDAP, the FTP server, and the plethora of other things I'm doing.

The problem being, and now I'm repeating myself.... Backup config is mentioned IN A SINGLE SENTENCE ONLY IN PASSING in the upgrade section. You're delusional if you cannot see how extremely easy it is to miss this single piece of information that exists in a section that really doesnt have anything to do with it.

I'm now unsubscribing from this thread. Again thanks for being useless.

You're welcome. Glad you wasted the forums time with your question.

It's mentioned several times in the manual. 2.6.1 gives a step on how to backup the config, 3.1.10 says you should backup the config before an upgrade, as well as 4.6.1 talks about the "Save Config" button.

There IS a difference between reading and understanding. You may have read the manual, but you clearly didn't understand/absorb the information. I know that when I read the manual if it mentions something I didn't understand I went looking for the answer. This was somewhat of a big ticket item because with EACH upgrade of FreeNAS the release notes mention to backup your config before you start the upgrade.

Glad things are working out for you though. And that you now understand what the "Save Config" button means.
