Gents,
Disclaimer : I did search for this. Came up with a thread from 2011, that seemed to me to peter out a bit early and assumed more knowledge that I have.
So - I have this FreeNAS box that has been wonderful, had it since 2011. I have also since bought 3 X 3 TB hard drives that I had in a Windows machine as a single spanned volume, to act as a back-up. I know all here will find this rather appalling - and I agreed, so this weekend, I dug out some older hardware, bought myself a reasonable case and started out to build a decent back-up server. Specs on it, for those interested :
MSI 785GM-P45 Mobo, AMD Phenom X3 720 processor, 8 GB RAM, those same 3 X 3 TB drives (Hitachi 5K3000, as I recall). Seasonic SS-300ET power supply. And yes, Cyberjock, I DID read the Hardware Recommendations thread you wrote - I stand warned about AMD hardware. =) (My other box has also been running on AMD hardware all this time.) It's running 9.3, and by the way, please allow me this opportunity to congratulate those who set up the wizard - it works a charm.
So anyway - now that I have this thing running, what do you guys reckon is the best way to back my server up to it? The other thread was saying RSync over SSH, but is this really necessary given that both are local? Is the best way the Replication I read about in the documentation?
My ideal solution would be something that automates back-ups - say, every 24 hours or so. I'm sure this is possible, right?
Cheers!
