Hi,

Ideally I would like to use Freenas as my only storage for data on my network. I would like to back it up & I am guessing that Rsync or a scheduled replication task may be the way to go.

I picked up a very cheap Dell Xeon server recently & would like to take 6x 2TB drives I have sitting around & make it the backup for my main server:

6x 6TB drives with 5.5GB used.

I would like to run a raidz2 but maybe raidz1 is the way to go for the backup (maybe another discussion). The 2TB drives can easily (free) be repurosed but is it enough space?

Thanks,
Rich

Huh? You are only using 5.5GB of space in your current system. If course 6x2TB is enough. You should probably do a raid z2 for your backup that will give you roughly a little less than 8TB usable.

What is the standard way of backing up the server? Are you backing up the data or replicating the entire server?

zfs replication is what you want to do. It is simple and allows you to do incremental backups. And why are you asking me a question?

You replicate at the dataset level.
