What's the preferred way to create a user that can access shares but cannot log into the FreeNAS box?

Change their shell to "nologin"?

Nope. I've been busy with actual bug reports, so I haven't had a chance to experiment in the absence of an answer.

The proper terminology is:

The proper way to create a user that can authenticate with available shares on the server but cannot log into the FreeNAS box either via local login or SSH is to set their shell to "nologin". :)

So yes, you are correct.
