I am running gigabit network and the server is full of movies most over 10gb each, i want to be able to view and copy files while watching movies at the same time without any slow downs. Just wondering if that is enough RAM? Also looking at purchasing another server to do VM's etc so want to use the freenas with that as well.

Also should I upgrade to 9.1-Alpha

Hi prod,

The N36L is the slowest model HP makes. If you are committed to using that I would look into a N40 or N56L. The N56L has a 2.2ghz proc.

One thing you might not be aware of....HP is introducing a new "Gen8" Microserver line in a few weeks. It might be worth holding off and seeing if the N36\40\56L's go on sale.

54, not 56. I don't think HP "makes" the N36L anymore... It's a real niche product for them, so when the Gen8 comes out, they'll probably stop making the N54L (after burning through N54L parts inventory). They seem to have fits and convulsions though, HP will get really aggressive with deals and rebates around the time of a new model release, such as the N54L going for $230 ... while the N40L's that vendors have rotting in inventory don't get that love, so you get this really strange thing going on where we're going to be seeing the NxxL come out and the N40L will be in vendor stock at a high price, the N54L being rebated at a low price, and the NxxL going for a little more than the N40L.

Talk about irrational. ;-)

Now I know I famously screwed up when I said there was no place for them to go forward with Turion; that statement was accurate from a certain point of view, because AMD's roadmaps are horrible and they really made it look like a dead-end. But it looks like I was still right, just one generation off... they've had to switch to Intel. Which may mean that there will be a prebuilt inexpensive low-end-server-grade NAS soon available for us to point people at .. with dual gigabit! Woo.
