Hi all, I am new here and would like to ask a little question.

I am setting up a little Freenas box on a N54l and I don't what to run the system 24/7 at this moment in time. I would be running the system 3 to 4 times week and when it is on it will stay on for 10h plus.

My question is would it be safe to do this e.g. would it affect zfs partition or affect the system in any way.

If this has been put in the wrong area I am sorry :)

Should be fine as long as you properly shutdown the system. You'll want to schedule your smart tests and scrubs for a time when the system is up.

Well, FreeNAS was designed to be on 24x7. If you search the forums we don't recommend you do regular shutdowns because of scheduled scrubs, SMART tests, etc. FreeNAS also does 3am maintenance and emailing, so this isn't exactly a good idea. I've personally dealt with 3 people that have lost their data and they all did shutdowns of their server, which was directly attributable to their loss of all data.

Not to mention you will be putting more wear and tear on your disks than simply leaving them on 24x7.

It's a personal choice, and if I were your IT guy I'd tell you to leave it on 24x7. That's exactly what I do, even when I leave the house for a weekend.

Thanks for the replies and for the advice :). At this moment I have the n54l running windows with storage space with backups weekly. I think I will keep that running for now to I make my mind up my mind up to if I want in running 24/7 on freenas.

Thanks again

Hi again :D.

I have been thinking about this all day and would like to know if it would be safer to run freenas for 5 to 6 days a week and have it shut down on the days I work away from home e.g. weekends. I would of course set all the maintenance to be done on the day that it is on.

That's better than shutting it down regularly. I'm not sure how much money you are thinking you are going to save, but on my rather beefy server the cost to run it for a whole day is like 33 cents. Not exactly going to break the bank if you just decide to leave it on 24x7. ;) And I'd bet your server uses much less power than mine. ;)

I'm doing regular scrubs and smartctl tests, but I shutdown the server at 04:00 am. Here 1Kw/h of energy is € 0,14 = 0,19 US $ :(

I just ordered a power meter to see how much it will use, but from what I have see on the web it is about 40w to 60w depending on drives and add-ons. I did a quick check and for my to run it 24/7 it would cost 18p a day (£5.40 a month) at 50w. So it is not that bad, but with all these things we always what to get it down as much as possible ;)
