I'm also a firefighter in my town. You'd be pretty amazed how many calls for service get started by someone uttering the phrase "hold my beer and watch this s***" or some derivative thereof...

In Texas? No, that seems to fit right in with my impression of Texas. ;-) ;-)

Went to a conference once in Dallas where we had dinner and then a social event. Seem to recall they brought in a bull and were letting people get on and take a picture with them on it.

Someone who works at poison control once commented to me that a surprisingly large amount of calls are preceded by "hold my beer". Especially calls involving snake bites. Apparently, one dude got bit in the face after trying to take a selfie with a rattlesnake.

Yep, that sounds about right. I've never had the urge to crawl on the back of 2-3,000lbs. of raging pissed-off.

We also have a rattlesnake roundup in Sweetwater - another GREAT idea...

This was for a bunch of networking geeks. I think they tranquilized the poor thing first.

I have a Freenas with 2 Dual Port Chelsio cards directly connected to 4 Vmware ESXI hosts.

Works great! This is one of many Freenas servers I manage. I am still learning about it though.

I love TX. Oklahoma is a very good state too. I will end up in TX though.

I'm not sure we're accepting any more Californian refugees at the moment. :D

I understand your apprehension. But let me put you at ease by saying I will "vote correctly" ;)

I have found that California really frowns on that.

No need for crossover cables. Gigabit ethernet and beyond include auto-MDI/MDIX as part of the standard.

The cheap solution is probably the SFP+ route. See the 10G Primer for some guidance to get up to speed on the technology. You need network cards, SFP+ optics, and some fiber, all of which can be acquired on eBay for maybe $200-$300.

Two of these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-X520-...Transceiver-X520-SR1-E10G41BFSR-/221922050587 which include the needed optics, and then a fiber cable, http://www.ebay.com/itm/10M-LC-LC-D...FIBER-OPTIC-CABLE-OM3-AQUA-10GB-/251824123605

That's a $255 solution right there and you can get it cheaper if you work harder at it.

So I've been poking around on ebay a bit.... what about something like this.... would a card like this have a simple setup / driver support?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Intel-X520-DA1-E10G41BTDA-G1P5-10Gb-10-Gbe-10-gigabit-Network-Adapter/201469481447?_trksid=p2047675.c100011.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D34293%26meid%3D642330b99f314ac1abd681c34ffe04c2%26pid%3D100011%26rk%3D7%26rkt%3D10%26sd%3D221922050587

Thanks!

Yes. The card may be old stock. The 10G world is moving towards copper, and that kind of card would more likely have been aimed towards end-user workstation or entry-level server use. The problem you're going to have with that card is that it doesn't come with the optic. If your PC and your NAS are sufficiently close, you can do a twinax direct attach type setup and that should work, otherwise you've got to deal with acquiring the optic and some fiber for it.

At the quoted price point http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Intel-X...0-Gbe-10-gigabit-Network-Adapter/201469481447 looks like Christmas in November!

EDIT: Yeah, that was too good to be true. New ones are expensive, but clearly even slightly used ones are being offloaded by many people at a tiny fraction of initial cost = lemon.

That's *possible*, but it is also possible that someone's just blowing those out because they've been sitting on a shelf for five years. I don't see any real cause for concern. Seller has quantity of them, in Florida, card has a 30 day seller warranty, seller's been on eBay nearly 10 years, 100% feedback with over 800 feedback entries. If I needed a single port DA card I'd buy one without any hesitation, I'd just make sure I was able to test it within the 30 day timeframe.

Hey, also... I know this is unrelated a bit (except an upgrade could be this with a new samsung 850 pro nvme m.2 - phew, just thinking about it)

http://www.asrockrack.com/general/productdetail.asp?Model=D1540D4I-2L2T#Specifications

I don't see an MSRP on this yet, but I'm guessing 800-1k.... maybe when this is $400.

Oh yay they finally did more than a press release with these. I had stopped looking every few days, haha. These have the potential to be totally awesome.
