Alert Smartd not running

There is a yellow alert light and when I click on it a popup says "Alert Smartd is not running"

What is Smartd? Why is it not running?

I haven't installed any physical disks yet, is that why? I only have my DOM in for my boot. Didn't want to load the hard drives until I got the bios flashed.

It's the SMART daemon who check the SMART values and alert you is there's a problem.

I believe it should start even if there's no drives but I'm not 100 % sure on this one, wait for another answer.

I plugged in my hard drives and rebooted. No Smartd error now.

Yeah, I don't think smartd runs if there are no devices attached with the capability.
