I know this probably isn't really FreeNAS related, but there are lots of clever people here using Macs too :D

Connecting to my FreeNAS shares on my old machine was always a little slow, but usually quite reliable. After rebuilding on my new machine, and setting up the AFP shares in what I thought was exactly the same way it's very, very slow and usually doesn't connect at the first attempt. Generally it will on the second attempt, although sometimes it fails to connect all together.

Sometimes restarting the AFP service in FreeNAS sorts out the problem, but some times the only solution appears to be logging out and logging back into to my Mac. It seems to be worse on my iMac than it does on my MBA, although that might just be a perception as I tend to be connecting to shares more often on the iMac.

Any idea what might be causing this?

Thanks

Anything related in /var/log/messages? Also, it might be a DNS issue. Is there a DNS server in the network? If so, does it have a record for the FN system? If no DNS server, is there an entry for the FN system in the hosts file of the Mac system?

Thanks for the reply!

Nothing obvious in /var/log/messages but I do have unbound running DNS in a jail, so that's a good place for me to start!

I've done some more investigation and I can't see anything that looks wrong with the DNS settings.

The problem doesn't occur on my backup FreeNAS box (freenas-2), which is always in the finder window and always connects within a few seconds of clicking it (on both my iMac and MBA), so it must be something in the configuration on the new box (freenas-1), but I can see what. AFP service and shares all look identical to the backup box.

Another symptom is that every now and again freenas-1 just disappears from the finder windows all together and doesn't come back by restarting the AFP service.

Stumped, but I've bought some introduction to networking books as I need to understand a little more about how this all works!
