I continue to use 'root' user to log into the WebGUI. Should I create a new user for my personal login to the WebGUI or would that be silly?

What do others do?

FreeNAS won't support that until 10 (other users accessing the GUI). Having said that, if you are using SSH to access the system, you should indeed be creating another user in the wheel group so they can gain root access as needed.
