Hello

Most likely a stupid question but have to ask not sure what to do....

I have alot of data on my NAS. running 9.1 and every time I try to down load it to another machine my nas crashes and reboots. I am using ZFS Raidz set up. I am trying to make a back up of all my data. Is it possible to access each drive individually since its software Raid.... Meaning can I plug each drive into my windows machine and retrieve the data that way?

thanks for any assistance.

Nope. ZFS and UFS isn't supported on Windows.

Rebuild the USB... what? Rebuild the FreeNAS boot media? You're going to need to clarify what you are trying to say.

Sorry I was talking about the boot media boot i figured that out .

How could I get an error report from freenas? Every time I try to download multiple files from the nas it reboots. So is there to get a crash report that can tell me if its a hardware problem or a software problem? Or exactly what the problem is.

Thank you by the way for responding to my questions you always help me when I have a problem and I am thankful....

Depending on your FreeNAS version you need to create a .system dataset or a .syslog dataset. The logs will be saved there when it crashes. If it's crashing and requiring you to reboot the machine manually then it could be a hardware or software problem. But, if it's spontaneously rebooting itself without user interaction that's almost always a hardware problem. You haven't provided any hardware specs for your server so I can't really tell you if your machine meets minimum requirements or if there's any obvious problems.

Please read the forum rules, especially rule #3. As cyberjock said, we don't know anything about your hardware, nor do we know if you are running the x86 or x64 version of FreeNAS.

ok

Freenas 9.2.1.3 release x64
Motherboard: Tyan Thunder k8s/k8s-d Pro (Server board)
2x Dual Core AMD opteron (tm) processor 27
16GB DDR ECC Memory
11x 2TB drives running ZFS (but only 10 drive are active in raid left spare drive for replacement)
3ware raid controller card set as JBOD since zfs is controlling the raid settings.

I am currently running some memory test on the memory stick to see if that is the problem so far no errors on 3 passes. using memtest86+.

ok here goes I hope I posted this correctly.

I just finish the memory test no errors after 11 passes. I ran the other test in the rules but not sure how to read the results. No sure what are errors. is there other test I can run?

Problem: Nas reboot randomly when trying to download multiple files.

system as followed:

Freenas 9.2.1.3 release x64
Motherboard: Tyan Thunder k8s/k8s-d Pro (Server board)
2x Dual Core AMD opteron (tm) processor 27
16GB DDR ECC Memory
11x 2TB drives running ZFS (but only 10 drive are active in raid left spare drive for replacement)
3ware raid controller card set as JBOD since zfs is controlling the raid settings.
using about 8.2TB of data right now.

The S2882 was favored around here in the mid 2000's and isn't a bad board, but they're starting to age and as they do, parts seem to fall out of spec a bit. You may simply have a board that's too far "gone". This is merely hypothetical but I won't have time to answer this during the week so I am throwing this out there.

One practical suggestion would be to try removing one CPU (which also takes half the memory with it) and see if the problem gets any better. Also note that the Opteron performs poorly (panics etc) if it is not being cooled properly, and a dual CPU configuration is twice as hard. It is also very sensitive to power supply fluctuations, so trying with a known good power supply is a good idea.

Many AMDs are known to be nothing but problems. They just don't seem to work well with FreeBSD. No clue why, just something I've observed with many AMD setups. Tyan used to be very good years ago, so I would like to think that it should work. But, as jgreco touched on, old hardware doesn't always work right anymore.

To be honest, I expect your end solution to be to replace the motherboard, CPU, and RAM to get rid of the problem hardware. Systems that randomly reboot are basically impossible to troubleshoot since the problem is most likely not software related. And since the reboot usually means no logs with any errors are saved, you have no information to go on for troubleshooting.

That's a little unfair to AMD; back in the day, Opteron was king. AMD failed to capitalize on their strategy and Intel overtook them, sadly. Also, Intel had a very powerful advantage in that they were releasing virtually entire computers worth of chips, while AMD was largely reliant on companies like Tyan to tie a system board together with components from various companies; the S2882UG3NR for example had an Adaptec SCSI controller and Broadcom gigabit ethernets on it (both of which tended to exhibit odd behaviours about 3 days after warranty expiration). The basic platform itself was awesome.

I don't consider it unfair. We've discussed this before. I'm not saying AMD or Intel are "better". The problem may occur with AMD based systems, but the problems aren't necessarily with the actual AMD hardware. In fact, most people never solve their problems and just buy Intel stuff that is recommended the most and the problem goes away. We all know that a sufficiently powerful CPU by either vendor is more than capable of sufficiently performing the task of running a FreeNAS server.

A system is more than just a CPU(as I'm sure you know). It could be motherboard manufacturers being cheap, it could be BIOS implementation by motherboards sucks, it could be that AMD CPUs suck, it could be that people building AMDs are more likely to buy the $35 motherboard(which we all know you get what you pay for). I don't know. The only thing I do know is that AMD systems seem to have more problems booting and running than Intel systems. For whatever reason. I won't begin to speculate why because that would be unfair. I'm only observing the behavior, I don't try to interpret why.

Thanks for your responses. I am going to actually upgrade to Intel which will be my best bet right now.
