access and group id problem

I'm using FreeNAS as an NFS server exclusively for a UBUNTU client to back up it's files, and I would *really* like to retain the user and group ID ownership information, and I have a question and a problem.

I created a volume and set it up as a "Unix (NFS) Share" with "All Directories", "Read Only", and "Quiet" NOT checked, and maproot and mapall options set to N/A, which gives me an /etc/exports entry of: /mnt/testShare -network 10.40.48.0/24. I also did NOT create any groups or users on the FreeNAS server.

My question: First, I could mount the share from my UBUNTU client, but I couldn't create any directories or files, so I used the FreeNAS shell to set the permissions of /mnt/testShare to 777. Is this the 'proper' way to allow access by everyone and anyone, or is there some checkbox in the web GUI along the way that I missed that would allow everyone access?

My problem: When I create files and directories from my client computer, the user ID is set properly, but the group ID is always set to Wheel (gid = 0), and nothing I can do from the client is able to change the group ID. Is there any way to get the group ID to be set from the client computer when the file is created?

Thanks,
Steve

What is the Owner(group) setting on the volume/dataset being shared?
