I did a direct upgrade from the GUI and it went without a hitch. Others have reported the same result. So... upgrading works well but importing a config on a fresh install - I'm not sure.

Can I use my 9.10.2 saved config file in version 11 Stable?

Thanks in advance.
No, sir, you can't upload a 9.10.2 configuration file in version 11.0. The configuration files are different.

Note that you can upgrade a system running 9.10.2 to 11.0; the configuration file is updated during the upgrade process.

Huh? I admit I haven't tried it, but this sounds very strange--the 9.x series has always supported uploading config files from at least recent previous versions. Of course things are different, but if the installer can handle an upgrade from 9.10.2, the code is obviously there to update the config db. Are you quite sure that you can't do this in 11?

I misspoke... turns out that you can upload a 9.10.2-U5 configuration file into 11.0! I tried it just now in my 'sandbox' FreeNAS virtual machine; FreeNAS upgrades the configuration file.

Thank goodness, you just about gave me a panic attack there. I typically do my "upgrades" by swapping between 2 USB drives, installing the new version clean on the "other" drive, then importing the config. Although I suppose I could've installed 9.10 on the spare USB drive , importing the config and tried upgrading, but... yuck. :)

Thank you for the info. My flash drive is running out of space, so upgrade won't be possible and I was wondering if upgrade is possible at all.

Can one of you guys confirm? As far as updating, If my System Dataset is in my boot drive (SLC SSD),
this will work as stated above?

I don't know if it matters where your system dataset is located; we've been concerned instead with the question of configuration files.

I have upgraded 3 live servers from 9.10.2-U5 to 11.0-RELEASE without problems. Converting the older configuration file to the new format is simply part of the upgrade process.

I also verified that you can upload a 9.10.2-U5 configuration file into an existing 11.0-RELEASE installation and FreeNAS will convert it to the new format. Here's how I checked this, starting with a 'scratch' virtual machine that was running 9.10.2-U5:
  • Saved a copy of the 9.10.2-U5 configuration to my local PC.
  • Installed a fresh installation of 11.0-RELEASE (not an upgrade, this was a new installation).
  • Uploaded the 9.10.2-U5 configuration file from my local PC: FreeNAS 11.0 read the configuration and converted it to the new format, requiring two reboots to do so.
Does this help?

Yes, that is helpful. Thanks!
I seem to recall that with a fresh install of latest 9.10.2, the System Dataset is in the data pool by default,
is this correct? Is this also default for 11.0 as well (the 11.0 User Guide lacks this info AFAIK).

Just FYI: I've completed following upgrade process successfully:

1. Ensure FreeNAS is on 9.10-U5.
2. Download backup config.
3. On a new USB flash drive install FreeNAS 11.
4. After the first reboot, via GUI (cancelled wizard) upload config from 9.10-U5.
5. FreeNAS will reboot (twice?)
6. You will get your working configuration.
7. Enjoy

Only thing I've observed, bunch of Python's DeprecateWarnings during the upgrade. It's not a bug, but something which will break in upcoming Python versions.
