I have an HP N36L equipped with 8Gb, 6 SATA 2Tb disks (5x Samsung EcoGreen, 1x WD20EARS but that's out of scope) and 1 USB boot stick and 1 USB attached 2,5 inch WDC 320 Gb harddrive.

My primary zfs pool is for the 6 disks, I have another on the USB attached WDC for the jails (~120 Gb).
This HDD also holds an UFS mount (~120 Gb) and the swap for all the disks (~42 Gb).

Previously on 8.3 this was an USB-stick (32 Gb) with the swap (15 Gb) and the aformentioned UFS slice.

I'm unsure which caused the problem, the upgrade from a stick to a USB attached drive, or the upgrade to 9.1.1, but I encounter this error. The last message on screen is:

da1:umass-sim:1:0:0): lost device - 0 outstanding, 2 refs

BTW I tried both the GUI and the cmd line.

Is there something I can tune in sysctls or tuneables or shutdown script to overcome this problem?
Occasionaly I do have to reboot though ;)

I'm kinda a total newbie around here, but I'd say you need to add more memory.

No that ain't the case, since I'm quite sure this didn't happen on 8.3. My performance is perfect as well and I hardly ever have to use swap.

Furthermore found this thread, which describes the same problem.

http://forums.freenas.org/threads/shutdown-issue-usb-error.14713/

I already tried this:
# Could help resolve reboot problems. Only crashes the system!!!!!!!
#hint.acpi.0.disabled="1"
In boot.loader, but that only made things worse.
Screenshot included with vga attached which also holds a ps2 mouse/usb keyboard on a usb RF receiver.

Edit; the problem also occurs when I shutdown.

Go to System -> Sysctls -> Add Sysctl
Variable: hw.usb.no_shutdown_wait
Value: 1
