Hello,

FreeNAS doesn't see 8 of 16 identical drives on my LSI SAS3081E. The weird thing is the controller sees all the drives on boot, but for some reason they're not being picked up by the OS. If I re-seat the drives after FreeNAS has booted, they all show up. Obviously that's not a long-term solution.

I just consolidated my drives from 18 across a 16-bay primary chassis +16-bay expansion tray down to the 16 in the primary chassis. All 16 drive bays on the primary worked fine with the previous drives, so I'm not inclined to think it's the backplane or power supply.

Any suggestions?

Does this mean that you don't have any data on the pool at this time?

I think we need more details about the hardware here?

Is that a typo? I can only find reference to a SAS3108 chip which is RAID.

Yes, that was a typo:

Code:
# mptutil show adapter
mpt0 Adapter:
	   Board Name: SAS3081E
  Board Assembly: L3-00159-02D
		Chip Name: C1068E
...

The card has been flashed in IT mode.

As far as the rest of the hardware:
  • Intel SE7520BD23 motherboard
  • Dual Xeon 3.2 GHz single-core HT procs
  • 16 GB RAM
  • Chenbro CK12803 28-port SAS expander
  • Sun F20 Flash Accelerator (4x 24 GB SATA flash drives on a PCI-e card)
  • 16x HGST H7240B520SUN4.0T 4 TB 7200 RPM SAS drives
  • Chenbro RM414 chassis with 3 GB/s SAS backplanes
Previously I had 6x IBM 2 TB 7200 RPM SAS drives, 5x HGST 3 TB 7200 RPM SAS drives, and 6x Seagate 300 GB 15K drives.

The expansion tray is another Chenbro RM414 chassis with the Chenbro UEK and another Chenbro CK12803.

I have data in the pool. Fortunately all 8 "missing" drives are in a single pool, so I can re-seat them and then import the pool. Wreaks havoc with my iSCSI/nfs/smb shares on boot, as you can imagine.

After this, I was able to import my pool.

Any ideas what could be going on?

Are you sure you reflashed your card to IT mode?

Per you post, its identified on boot as
Code:
LSILogic SAS1068E-IR

Which I believe is RAID mode

Thanks for the reply JDE.

As I already indicated, it has been flashed with IT firmware. Trust me, it's not in RAID mode. These aren't JBOD disks, the disks are passed through.

And as I also said, it was working just fine with the previous drives.

If you want to fix the problem you can not constantly disregard the input of people who are trying to help.

LSILogic SAS1068E-IR is an old controller that only supports drives smaller than 2 TB, additionally the "IR" on the end means that it is in RAID mode. It will say "IT" if it is in "initiator target" mode.
