Hi, Im new to freenas and have invested in a HP Microserver to manage whole house media. I have 6 drives and wondered if anyone had recommendation on the best configuration. Im initially thinking of 3 groups of mirrored drives (straight mirroring) but would appreciate any thoughts any one has.

Thanks.

Depends on what your priorities are. See here. If your top priority is data integrity, you're better off with RAIDZ2, which as a bonus would give you more storage than the mirrored drives. If your top priority is speed of reads, especially if you have lots of random reads, then the mirrored drives would be faster. But ... for home use, it's pretty hard to imagine that you would ever need the extra speed provided by mirrored drives, and reads for media is sequential, not random, which means you would be giving up storage space and data integrity with no upside. So go with RAIDZ2 unless you have a really good reason (like insufficient RAM to run ZFS) not to.

Best regards.
