Hello,

I am thinking to build freenas for first time. I don't care to have multiple parity as I will backup to more locations. How I can get mot usable space from 4 HDs?

Use raidz1, you will lose 1 HDD for parity.

But if you're looking for optimal performance go with 5, it is the optimal number for raidz ((2^n + 1)

Thanks for the reply.

However if I use for example 4x1TB HDs, raidz1 this means I will have 3TB (2.7 TB actually) usable disk space from which 1 can fail and not lose any data ?

Thanks
