Good luck finding DDR DIMMs. Also I believe this card doesn't support any kind of error detection/correction and would have 130-150MB/s max troughput.

Intel P3700 with NVMe/PCIe connector is a good choice for really fast SLOG devices (~250MB/s), alternatively Intel S3700 with SATA only (~100MB/s).

You make some valid points there. I was just browsing around to see what else was out there besides a 10 or 15K piece of hardware but I'm thinking I should be fine. I'm going to have 48GB of RAM with only 20TB of storage so I should have enough for buffering. At least I think so.

heh, the P3700 400GB is around 1.2-1.5k$ and a single PCIe card would suffice. The writes for which you would get a SLOG are never cached. For full-on memory caching of all writes you could disable sync writes - but that doesn't gurantee you that the writes are committed to the disk array.

However since your system is likely to not have PCIe 3.0 speeds at a triple-channel memory interface, you will probably not see the full 250MB/s on the P3700.

Yea, still out of my price range. I'll be running 6 8GB DDR3 sticks and 5 9211-8i controllers that are PCI 2.0 devices in PCI 2.2 PCI Express slots with a Intel Xeon X5690. That being said I should have enough throughput to handle 250MB/s
I guess that is besides the point though.
I just want to build this system to be smooth running and fast

Thus far I'm planning on using some SSDs for ZIL and L2ARC
