Setup:
  • FreeNAS 11.1 VM running in ESXi 6.5 Update 1
  • LSI 9211-8i HBA in IT mode, hardware pass-through to VM
  • 4x 4TB WD Reds connected to the HBA via SFF-8087 to 4 X SATA cable
The HDDs were purchased about year ago and I have been testing them on and off with FreeNAS and other software RAID solutions, but nothing was ever finalized yet and the HDDs were barely used. I had set the project aside since earlier this year and the drives have been sitting unplugged for some time. I just started playing around with FreeNAS again this week and when I booted up FreeNAS, I noticed that the Alerts had 2 critical errors:
Code:
CRITICAL: Nov. 20, 2018, 10:08 p.m. - Device: /dev/da3 [SAT], ATA error count increased from 590 to 594
CRITICAL: Nov. 20, 2018, 10:08 p.m. - Device: /dev/da1 [SAT], ATA error count increased from 615 to 617

I ran a short test on both drives and they returned 0 errors (smartctl -t short /dev/da1). I ran a long test on da1 (smartctl -t long /dev/da1) yesterday and it just finished with 0 errors. I'm now running a long test on da3 and it will be done by tomorrow.

Here's the output of smartctl -a /dev/da1:
Code:
root@freenas:~ # smartctl -a /dev/da1

I see a lot of "Error ### occurred at disk power-on lifetime..." errors on the output, but I also see those on /dev/da2 and /dev/da4, but no critical errors for those devices show up in the FreeNAS alerts. Any troubleshooting suggestions you guys can offer?

Attribute 199 is often cabling. We see a lot of people that start throwing CRC errors because something is wrong with cabling.

It also looks like you don't have routine smart testing configured. That's something you should address as well.

2. 199 UDMA_CRC_Error_Count 0x000a 200 200 000 Old_age Always - 596

Interesting.... I just check the other 2 drives and found this:

da2 shows this:
199 UDMA_CRC_Error_Count 0x000a 199 199 000 Old_age Always - 125497

and da4 shows this:
199 UDMA_CRC_Error_Count 0x000a 200 200 000 Old_age Always - 139406

but neither of those appear as critical errors in FreeNAS. Is it because the error count hasn't increased on those 2 disks? I purchased both the cable and HBA from ebay, so quality may be an issue. I do have a 2nd cable I can try, but will those error counts ever go back to 0 if I switch to good cables?

Edit: is it possible that the HBA could be faulty as well, or is the UDMA_CRC_Error_Count purely related to cables?

It's a brand new install/instance of FreeNAS. I don't even have my drives configured in a RAID array yet.

Yes

No, UDMA_CRC errors don't reset, but as long as they don't keep increasing you're fine.

Cable is always the number one suspect for these errors, but it can also be the HBA, or just some of the HBA port(s), if you're using a backplane it can also be the culprit.
