Hello,

Great community here by the way and i am proud to be part of it,

instead of lurking around, i thought id ask a question of my own, i am what you call a noob and building my 1st ever nas system.
it will mainly be for Plex/Transcoding 1080p movies to 2 separate TVs (will the build be good enough for future higher resolutions).
i also want to store photos as im slowly getting used to the DSLR.

How many disks do you intend to install? Unless you plan on using all more than 6 disks, the X10SL7-F-O may be overkill. I contemplated using that board when researching my build, but went with a X10SLH-F-O instead. Saved about $50.

There are also many other X10 boards that are cheaper than the X10SLH-F-O.

I chose Supermicro certified Samsung RAM, but that Cruicial RAM seems to working well for many other fellow members of the community.

Thanks for the reply.

I was planning on Max 4 x 4TB discs,
I will look into the Samsung ram.

The motherboard price in the UK via Amazon is only a difference of approx £10-15.

The X10SLL-F/X10SLL+-F/X10SLM-F/X10SLM+-F works out as well. the SLH-F can still be quite overpriced since it comes with the C226 chipset, which is overkill for a FreeNAS.

Same opinion on Crucial DIMMs, they work, but I'd rather pick the Samsung M391B1G73QH0-YK0 since they're Supermicro verified.

The Crucial DIMMs are verified for the X10SL7-F, X10SLL+-F, X10SLM+-F, X10SLM+-LN4F and X10SLH-F. They're just rebranded Micron DIMMs - the exact model validated by Supermicro.

Maybe, but it's not a part number verified by Supermicro. They can get quite the stiffy on that...

I used a Node 804 case for my build and like it a lot. Lots of room for drives and good airflow.

If they ask, read back the Micron sticker on the DIMM instead of the Crucial sticker. They're both there.

so in other words the parts i listed should be ok and will work with one another?

This is the same setup I have, except the processor. Intel has a newer version of the E3-1230v3 processor. The E3-1231v3 is the newer version. It only costs $3 more on Newegg.

I've been happy with this setup so far. I haven't put it under in heavy loads yet, but is doing quite nicely.
