so far i been told 2 setups, 11z3+1spare and 6z2+6z2.
the problem is that both will kill 25% of the drives leaving me with only 21TB at best

anyone got anymore ideas of making this pool having at least 24tb RAW
setup is 8 drives connected to one m1015 and 4 drives connected to another m1015 (came out cheaper to have two cards and one card + expander)
drives are 3TB

Nope. Either you want the redundancy at the cost of space or you don't. If you care about disk space available over redundancy you sure can do that. But as I explained in the other thread, that's "data-suicide".

Decisions like yours stop many people in their tracks as this decision may later be the nail in the coffin for your data. And you can't change it later. I'd say that if you have to wait another month so you can afford more disks or something you should seriously consider it.

Other than that, good luck. Trying to argue over redundancy is like arguing over fate. Either you're going to be an example of what others shouldn't do, or you will be one of a very very few lucky people that will get away with it.

the device has a capacity for 12 drives. i got 12x3tb drives on it. and besides 11z3+spare and 6z2+6z2 i havent heard any more suggestions.
in the past 2-3 years i never seen an URE. so ill risk it. the question is, besides being scared of URE, is there anything else i should know good/bad about 3z1+9z1?

The recommendations are based on optimal performance. That doesn't mean you have the follow the recommendations ...

You might want to read this thread about moderator's with non-optimal array sizes. Perhaps you might setup some non-optimal array sizes and do some testing, along the lines of what survive did.
