Not if you think you might roll back to the previous version of FreeNAS. If you are not going back, you may as well upgrade.

From a quick search of the internet, it appears that the new features are as follows:
Code:
Some supported features are not enabled on the following pools. Once a
feature is enabled the pool may become incompatible with software
that does not support the feature. See zpool-features(7) for details.

POOL FEATURE
---------------
sys
	 sha512
	 skein
	 device_removal
	 obsolete_counts
	 zpool_checkpoint

I make no guarantee.

I would not upgrade your pool until 11.2 U1 is out. Just in case you find a major reason to go back to 11.1.

Unless you remove a disk or have an active checkpoint (which you can easily get rid of), you can easily import the pool in 11.1, as the Resource says.

You got me there, I haven't read it yet. Considering many peoples lack of attention to such details (including my own this time), I still prefer blanket statements.

I have moved pools from FreeNAS to Linux and back for purposes of data migration at work and have not had any trouble with importing pools except that you get the error (something like) 'the pool is already in use'. It just takes a -f to force it and a FreeNAS created pool will work fine on Linux, then you can bring the pool, once filled with data, back to FreeNAS. It is like having a big SAS connected portable drive. I imagine a USB drive the size of a large suitcase.
The only time the feature flags present an issue is if you use the feature. Since FreeNAS 9.10.2, the features have been 'close enough' for the things I have done. I just hate to see the message about it, so I update when a new set of features is available, especially since you can do it in the GUI now. It was done at the command line in, 'the old days'.

Yeah, it'd be nice to be able to hide the message until new features are available again. Though I imagine that everyone will jump onto native encryption once that's available in stable.

So just got on the 11.2 and I have this same question. Is it worth it? My OCD brain always like things updated...
