Hello all, this is my first post and I have never built a NAS before. I have built a few gaming computers though.
My wife's hard drive crashed and her computer was pretty old (2010), so I built her a new PC last week. We had been talking about a raid setup to store files that we can access from all of our devices. We decided to try and convert her old PC into a NAS for all of our files and also to run a plex media server for the house. My wife is a photographer and does photo editing a lot. We want her to be able to edit directly from the NAS. I am looking for feedback on whether this is worth our time since the hardware is dated, or if we should start fresh.
Here is what we have available already:
Motherboard make and model: Asus P7P55D Deluxe
CPU make and model: Intel i5 760
CPU Cooler: Corsair A70
RAM quantity: G.Skill Ripjaws X 32 Gb (16 x 2)
Hard drive: 500 Gb crucial MX500
Power Supply: Cooler Master GX650W
Case: Cooler Master HAF 922 (up to 5 HDD + 1 SSD boot drive)
This is what we are looking at purchasing:
X540-10G-2T (2x 10GBase-T Port) for direct 10gbe from each desktop to the NAS. The NAS will connect to our internet via built in 1Gb on the motherboard. We have 1Gb internet.
HDDs: 3x Seagate Ironwolf Pro 18TB in Raid 5.
I appreciate any feedback before we pull the trigger.
