Why am I missing space?

I upgraded my 2 drive RAID1 to a 3 drive RAID5.

Method 1: I tried using the "Replication Task" to move my data and snapshot. This worked, but I noticed I roughly lost 2TiB of space somehow.

Method 2: I wiped the 3 drives and then tried a simple Copy and Paste through the network.
Again, despite transferring only 3.4TiB, I somehow used 5.2TiB total.

I lost all my snapshots after performing method 2, so I don't see what's using all my space.
I am using 8TB drives.

Edit: Is the 16.6TiB false?

On a side note, is it okay that I have 1 loud drive in in my setup?
I've replaced the noisy drive once, but the replacement drive is almost as loud as the original. I can feel the drive vibrate during write operations. I'm not sure if I'm unlucky or if this is normal.

You are not missing data. I also got puzzled by that when I started using FreeNAS.
The first line 5.2 is the total used capacity: data+raid parity.
The second line is the real used data.
So you have a total of 21.7TiB capacity with 3 discs, but effective capacity of 14Tib when using RAIDZ1.

Thanks. This makes sense. I thought maybe FreeNAS had some special RAID that was more disk efficient...

With the new GUI only the effective usage is shown which makes IMHO more sense.
No, there is no special FreeNAS RAID. Unfortunately you can't trick math ;)

Can you give me advice on the clicking noise on my drives?
Out of my 4 drives, two of them make the noise and vibrate. The only difference between the drives is that the two clicking drives were on SATA3 ports while the silent drives are on SATA2.

I don't want to exchange the drive again, so I'm going to revert back to a 2 drive RAID with the two new silent drives if this is going to be problem.

The 2 noisy drives just sound like they're seeking their head arms. You could try installing rubber isolators to cut down on the acoustic transmission from the drive to the cage.

I was more concerned that this might be a sign that there is something wrong with the drive.

But I think I'm overthinking things. My NAS has been down for 4 days and I likely forgot what HDDs are supposed to sound like.

If you feel like experimenting, many drives do have jumper settings which force them to a lower speed. *If* the ones you have support this (jumper settings should be printed on their label) you could try forcing them to 3Gbps and see if they quiet down.
