Can web browser be closed during update process?

Every time I have updated my FreeNAS system, I left the window open (of my web browser) until the update finishes and the server reboots. I am unsure if closing the page during the update process might interrupt it or cause issues?

If I read /usr/local/lib/python3.7/site-packages/middlewared/plugins/update.py correctly, there's no handler for an interrupted update. However, you should still be able to reboot into your previous boot environment to delete any incompletely updated boot environments, and restart the update.

To make sure, though, will closing the web browser window interrupt the update process?

That's a bit disturbing. It's as if you can brick a system simply by closing the page or tab of whatever web browser you're using at the time.

No, your original boot environment remains intact, and you can select it again to reattempt the upgrade.
