SOLVED FreeNAS 9.10 Won’t Boot

Hey all!

I have a server with known failing disks that we’ve been “managing” for some time now.

The device power cycled by itself probably cos it’s overloaded and now it won’t boot. See attachment for error.

Side note: I’m a Network Admin and this isnt my strongest suite.

Looks like the boot drive has died.
Replace it, reinstall FreeNAS and load the saved config.
No data loss should occur.

I’ll will give this a shot asap!

I unfortunately do NOT have a backup config :(. Is there a way to retrieve what was configured on the usb stock with damaged FreeNAS?

Hopefully the instructions on the use of mc will work for you. You can use MC from the shell, but I find ssh to be better.

Also - you can get to that location from a Windows machine - using SSH that is built in to Win10 now, or with WinSCP, and others.

I got to work not long ago, created a FreeNAS bootable drive, installed 9.10.2-U6 on a new disk, shut the system down, reconnected all the drives and fired the server up.

I'll share an update as soon as I have something solid.

The installation was pretty straight forward and i can access gui.

* I can view all connected disks, but nothing shows up in my pool
* Based on what was shared in the links above, I can see a config file in this directory. Is this possibly what I need to restore my configs?!

I successfully imported pools, but it appears the config may have been lost. I uploaded the 'freenas.v1.db file, but it had the new config created today. Is it possible the config is on the old boot drive?

I think the thread I linked to takes you through how to save the .db file, unmount the pool, then upload the saved db file, as a saved config, through the gui.

• I was able to find the hidden file using WinSCP after I entered the path manually!
• I moved too quickly and didn't unmount the primary volume before uploading the config, but that seemed to work without issues
• Everything is back like it never went down - I'm ecstatic to say the least!!
  
  Now just need to figure out how to mirror the boot drive. I was moving so quickly, I didn't bother doing it in the beginning.
