VM lags Freenas

Hello,

I have been testing VMs in Freenas and I got up to a point which I am a little bit tired of this hypervisor, the last thing I noticed is that if I configure a NIC with a lagg inside in a VM when I start the VM, all the system stops like 5 seconds until the system brings the VM up, which makes my samba dataset stop and not working until the VM is up, in the case I am copying a file, the file transfer just drops to 0kbps or if I am watching a movie or listenning to music it just stops.
Here is the image that freenas prompts while the VM is starting:

In case I configure a NIC without a lagg inside, it seems like the VM starts instantly and nothing is affected.
Does anyone have any idea about this?

Now that I am writing here wanted to say a few more things. I can not understand why freenas team recommend to install freenas as the main OS, when the jails are so limited in terms of installing freebsd (OS that I currently do not like), do not understand why not using openvz or LXC, which at my point of view is much better.
And the VM works so horribly for example with this problem and also by installing the last releases for example of ubuntu, which is not capable of. Apart of the limited config options that the hypervisor have.

Kind regards

Yeah... FreeNAS is based on FreeBSD. If you don't like it, you don't have to use it.

FreeNAS is primarily a NAS. One that uses ZFS for incredibly resilient and reliable storage. If you look into ZFS, it is strongly recommended to have raw access to the disks. Again this is a Free Network Attached Storage server. ZFS is fundamental to this role as a NAS
when the jails are so limited in terms of installing freebsd
Can you install windows in a docker container or BSD in a docker container? No. You can't. Containers and jails are OS level virtualization meaning they run the same OS as the host.
OS that I currently do not like
Sorry? Nope. I'm not. I like the FreeBSD OS. I also like the linux kernel and ecosystem. You don't have to.
openvz or LXC
Those are LINUX options. Not FreeBSD.
Apart of the limited config options that the hypervisor have.
If you don't like bhyve, just install virtualbox in a jail. Derp.

What is the reason for a lagg in the bhyve VM? Just set up the lagg on the host (FreeNAS) and use the lagg as the backing interface.

Kind regards

I would think that maybe virtualizing freenas directly under another better hypervisor would result in better performance than using an hypervisor under a jail. As you replied, freenas is a NAS system, don't think it is the best system for VMs thats why. And yes, sorry, but I do not like freebsd.

That is what I am doing, I have currently a lagg on the host and then assigned it to the VM:

But it is lagging all the system when starting up the VM

Depends on what your using it for. Or better yet, get a second server and run ESXi 6.7 and use NFS/iSCSI for the storage.

If that's FreeNAS 11.1* A lot has changed with respect to the networking with jails and bhyve. If your on 11.2BETA3, please file a bug report and post back here with the number.

11.1-U6 is the stable version but bhyve is still new in FreeNAS and a lot of tweaking is going on.
and is this a bug with solution or not?
You can try moving to a beta and see if it better. If not file a bug report. Unfortunately I'm not a freeNAS developer so I cant say much more.

It can be a slow process. It may take an hour.

It finally booted but with some weird errors, I am gonna install it from 0 and lets see how it goes. But I tried to boot a VM and the starting machine progress bar was still there, what I could not test was if the system was also lagging or not.

Yes, I tested it again, and every time I power on or off a VM which interface is the lagg interface of the system all the system laggs

Sounds like you should file a bug report.

I have openned one.
Now I am getting to the point that freenas has taken 6Gb of RAM and my VM cannot be booted up because I have only 8GB of RAM in my system. And freenas is telling me the following:
EFAULT] Cannot guarantee memory for guest Services
Do you know how can I empty RAM from freenas to open my VMs?

There a a few quirks with the memory reservations at this point in the beta but the bigger issue is trying to run a VM with only 8GB on the host. ZFS is a memory pig and if you starve it, bad things happen.
Would you mind posting a detailed list of parts and model numbers so we can advise further?

So, you’re running FreeNAS below it’s minimum requirements
