Is there a way to do this without royally screwing up my existing data? I'd like to do this for all existing and new data created in the dataset. Not sure why I chose windows permissions years ago when I originally setup freenas on 9.2. I'm Currently running 9.10.2-U1.

Changing permissions type won't affect your data, but it may affect permissions on your files, which will affect whether your files will be accessible by client systems. Are you using Samba? If so, stick with Windows permissions type.

That's what I'm worried about. I want to be able to access using my Mac and the NFS share I have set up on that dataset. I also want my plugins (Plex, SickRage, Couchpotato, Sab, Transmission) to be able to access the folders and data within the folders on the dataset. I have a CIFS share on the same dataset, which I now know was a big no no. I no longer access the CIFS share and can remove the share if needed. I'm not sure if I'm using Samba or not. This is a personal home server used for media and file storage.

If you want to use Unix permissions, switch that in the GUI, reset permissions and set them up as needed.

This wont negatively effect the existing data in the dataset to the point where I can't access it?

It's just permissions. Ultimately, you can become root and do whatever the hell you please. The OS could just ignore them if it wanted to...

After changing to Unix, how do I "reset" the permissions?

There's a button for that.
