I have seen a replacement drive failure during the burn-in, don't worry about that, just keep replacing drives until they are all good.

Do you recommend using Diskspd or any other programs on my secondary PC to test drives?
I use Dban boot-and-nuke for a 3 pass wipe with verify between passes, then a short and long SMART test after. If a drive is weak, that would kill it.
I figure if it passes, it is good.

The big difference with Dban is that it will do all the drives connected but that is the only thing the system will do because it is booted from a special ISO. The shame of it is, a company bought it and now there are no new versions comming, but it does the job. It uses
Mersenne Twister to generate the random data that it lays on the disk. Default just has it write all the passes and verify the last, but I change it to verify every pass. This works the disk a bit harder and helps to detect bad blocks.

This is not the way that most people on the forum test hard drives, but I feel it is functionally similar and I have a spare system to dedicate to the activity. It just makes it easier for me to do it this way. Here is a link to the more FreeNAS centric way:

Note that if you have available SATA ports, you could resilver without removing the old disks until the process is complete. That's the ideal situation.

So just offline the drive I want to resilver but keep plugged in to the original SATA port?
No, don't offline the disk at all. Install the new disk, select the old disk in the GUI, click Replace, select the new disk in the window that pops up. Resilvering will begin. When it finishes, the old disk will be taken offline.

Don't forget to do the burn-in.

Hi,
just got two new recertified drives from WD RMA. These are the results from the long smart tests. Are these drives ok to deploy?

The badblocks -ws is taking almost a day and is still at 58%, no errors though. Should I just skip this for the second drive?

You can test more than one drive at a time.

Should I continue badblocks tests? one drive over 50 hours of testing and the other over 29 hours.
So far zero errors.

It is a risk.
You never really know if they are bad if you don't test the whole drive.

The directions are here:
https://neth.familybrown.org/dokuwi...lid_hdd#destructive_badblocks_test_using_tmux
Code:
Navigation between the different sessions is achieved by pressing the “Ctrl” and “b” keys together, releasing them and then pressing the “n” key. This will take you to the next session along.

Alternatively you can also press the “Ctrl” and “b” keys together, release them and then press the “p” key. This will take you to the previous session.

By using the next and previous navigational keystroke combinations you can navigate through the different sessions, the asterisk signifying which session you are currently viewing.

When I type "tmux attach" after logging in Putty, it says "sessions should be nested with care, unset $TMUX to force".
and says not next windows when trying to switch sessions
