I know X11 is fairly new in the world of freenas. but I'm looking to upgrade my current box in preparation foe FN10. I have the motherboard and processor picked out but not sure about the memory. are the only options really the 3 manufacturers on the super micro site?

16gig modules x2 to start with a 32gig system
Hynix HMA82GU7MFR8N-TF (not really a server guy so unsure about the brand for future upgrades)
Micron MTA18ASF2G72AZ-2G1A1 (is this the same as crucial?)
Samsung M391A2K43BB1-CPB (sold out in many places)

looking at
X11SSM-F-O
Intel Xeon E3-1230 v5

I have
SM 8 Bay hot swappable case
4 WD RED 3tb drives
3 WD Black 1tb drives
32gb USB for OS
the 4x3tb drives I use as storage and I want to virtualize macOS and unix on the 3x1tb

I like the Samsung stuff usually. Crucial is also really good. Hynix is the same as Kingston, if it's on the supported list it should be fine but some people don't like those brands because of random past history.

Long story short, get anything on the list in your price range and is available.

I'm utilizing the Samsung memory you listed on my X11 board. I agree it's hard to find, and I purchased my sticks from a two different retailers. All the sticks I received had an additional "Q" at the end of the number.

On a side note, can I ask how are you planning to virtualize macOS? Interested in doing the same, but curious as to the different approaches.

well now that the holidays, sports and re-certing is done I'm going to see how I can get (if I can get) Mac virtualized. id like to use Mac server for profiles for all my families iOS devices

I wouldn't say that, I've had my X11SSM-F for close to a year now.

What? Hynix is one of the big three DRAM manufacturers. They're on the same tier as Samsung and Micron. They're definitely tier A and on the level. I also never heard of any trouble with Hynix (unlike Kingston).
Micron MTA18ASF2G72AZ-2G1A1 (is this the same as crucial?)
Yes. Crucial is easy to get directly from Crucial.com, though it's hard to have advanced knowledge of which Crucial parts correspond to which Micron parts. In practice, there's only one SKU for a given set of charcateristics, so it's going to be a relatively safe bet that you can get the models from the QVL.
