Good morning.

I'm testing out FreeNAS . I have several different systems in my home (Windows, Mac, Roku, AppleTV). What is the best type of share(s) to set up if I want to get and save files on either my Windows or Mac machines as well as streaming videos and music (using plex) to my AppleTV and Roku devices?

Thanks.

Your best bet is to use Samba and Windows datasets. OSX since 10.8 now defaults to SMB for remote shares. Plex will have no problem reading from a Windows dataset.

So when using the wizard to set up shares, which option will get me Samba?

Also, if I'm having separate shares for my different media (i.e., a share called Movies, one called photos, one called music, etc.) do i use the wizard and just use the same volume name and just add an additional share to it?

Thanks for the quick response.
