Hi
I am a long time user of FreeNAS. Ever since the Plugin System was implemented I have been waiting for a plugin that would share and organize my photos. I dont have the know how to implement a jail with some kind of gallery "app". However i would donate towards a gallery plugin of any sort. For example...:

either one or something similar would get my donation!

Anyone up for the challenge? :)

Best regards
Nicklas

You could achieve this with the Plex Media Server plugin, or even better manually install into a jail!

Whilst it's main purpose is cataloging film and TV programmes, you can also catalogue music, pictures and home video too. Might be a little overkill if you're just using for pictures, but it would work and would require little effort!

I'm throwing my hat in this ring. Either the Plex or Emby plugins will serve up a variety of media in a variety ways, and are extremely flexible and versatile.

This is my solution right know. Sharing it with friends req plex login. correct me if am wrong. And well thats not the best option...

I think that is correct, but why isn't it a good option? Plex accounts are free.

For example i wouldnt be able to have guest access to some pic. And if you compare plex with other dedicated foto "software" it is'nt as flexible or open for customization...

That makes no sense; you ether give all guests access, or you you authorize a specific person or goup of specific persons.

And how do they access your pictures? Do they bring their laptop and connect to your home network? Or do they access your pictures on the Internet?

Maybe you just need an online photo gallery. There are plenty of solutions for that.

Users would need to sign-up for a free Plex account.

It is possible to give specific users access to specific content, but you would need to consider how you load your media. It's much easier to do at a 'library' level.

You can set it up to allow downloads, but it is just a solution for viewing pictures (either flicking through or as a slideshow) and doesn't have any editing capabilities.

Agreed, but it's here, now, and provides a way of sharing photos with people both local and remote.

As to the three you suggest, Gallery's been dead for a couple of years now (I have memories of running it on my own site years ago), but the other two look nice. I'll bet you could get either of them going in a jail without too much work. Start by setting up a FAMP stack in a jail, and then the install docs for either Piwigo or Lychee look fairly straightforward.

I will try again - thanks for the link!

An online gallery is what i am aiming for with some easy way to set rights to each pic/album

another option currently available is owncloud. it has a gallery app installed by default and you can share folder of images with a link

I suspect the gallery app in ownCloud would be horrible to use with more than a few thousand pictures. I've got about 300-400 and it's slow to load and click through images, or at least it is compared with Plex where I have over 30,000 pictures and they open and switch seemlessly, even outside my LAN.

yeah it's slow for me when browsing through a folder with about 1500 photos. not sure how plex could do this faster, it still needs to get your browser to download the same amount of thumbs. maybe just more efficient way of loading what you are about to see?

I'm not sure either, as it's using the same connection when I'm away from home, but Plex handles it much better than ownCloud

I had a VM up and running for WordPress with a FEMP stack so thought I'd have a look at this. Pretty simple to install, the interface is nice and simple, and it seemed snappy enough with a few hundred pictures, but importing and cataloguing them looks like a right pain in the arse :D

Plex is just a case of pointing it to your library and leaving it to it for a few hours.

I'm running Piwigo and Lychee is on the list for a replacement.
Piwigo works, but it's kind of a pain. Adding new photos requires a manual scan and with many images that takes a long time will likely time out before it completes. You can speed things up by first just scanning for new folders and then scan each folder individually, but that's a pain on it's own.

Plex is adequate for browsing images, but not that great if you're looking to find images for sharing or uploading elsewhere. I've also had issues where the scanner crashes while importing photos and then fails to display thumbnails. I've solved this by writing a script that scans individual folders, but that shouldn't be necessary.

Lychee looks promising as it doesn't require a database and just presents your photos as they exist on disk; generating and caching thumbnails as required. The install should be really simple as well.

Overall it's a little surprising how empty this category is. Most galleries are targeted at artists looking to present their portfolios, not home users looking to browse thousands of images.

ZenPhoto looks like another good option.

That is because nobody browses thousands of images. Well, maybe once, and then they never do it again.

I used to create long, an hour long or more, slideshows with music and animation; I quit doing that when I noticed how bored people become after watching the first five minutes or so.

It is much more useful to quickly find a few relevant pictures than browse thousands.

Sure, if you're publishing an album for others to view. But, that still leaves the full archive of all the originals and even slogging once through those to find the few relevant ones worth sharing is painful enough through a file system. Far better to have a good gallery that supports thousands and lets you quickly create smaller albums for sharing.
