Make sure you follow the guide on how to replace a drive to make sure things go smoothly
I realize that you are in a bind right now and want to restore redundancy. But I think that it is worth mentioning that most of us seasoned users would be sure to "Burn In" the drive before putting it into production. Not trying to tell you to do this in this case, but keep that in mind. For reference, I have links to that in my sig as well. ;)
Thanks for all the nuggets, im taking everything to heart. About 6 hours ago I put the seagate offline, powered down, pulled the seagate and installed a new 2tb WD Red. Its 50% through the silvering process.
I have come to realize that even though freenas servers are rock solid, they are not "Ronco" you cant set it and forget it!!!! :D
This episode has really opened my eyes. Firstly, the seagate was old and eminent failure (relocating sectors) wasn't a big surprise. However, the other two drives with the check-some errors are not that old. The case has never been cleaned since I built it two+ years ago and dust had caked and cratered everywhere. Air flow was shotty at best. It was probably like a sauna in there which lead to the degraded drives with check-some errors. If my hard drives were kids they would have been taken away from me for neglect!!! LOL
The plan moving forward is to:
- implement regular physical case maintenance to insure proper air flow over the drives
- replace any suspect drives as $$$ allows (drives with any errors and/or degradation)
- create a data backup plan
- make sure to actually monitor the email address where freenas sends server info!!!! geez...
- double check my smart test intervals for optimal usage
Phase two:
- change case to the Fractal Design Define R4 for easy drive replacement
- label all hard drives
- move to a server class mother board that supports my existing ecc ram (im open to suggestions)
- transition from amd to intel processor (im open to suggestions)
hopefully my indiscretions made public will prevent somebody from making the same mistakes
thanks to everyone, ill keep this thread updated with my progress
