Cannot access CIFS

Hello.

I've been having a problem all day today which is getting me really worked up. I've tried to fix it for hours now but it seems like I need to ask for help.

I've connected my windows laptop to my NAS directly via ethernet. I've set a static IP on windows. I've made an interface and have set a static IP on it. I've made sure that they are on the same subnet mask. I've changed the cable numerous times. I've rebooted both systems.

It's driving me crazy. I cannot understand why it's doing this.

I tried to ping windows from NAS. It says Host is down. I tried to ping the NAS from windows. It says Request timed out. :(

Is there a firewall enabled on the Windows system? What type of cable are you using?

I tried disabling firewall just now and I still get the same results. I'm using a Cat.5e cable. I've also tried using 3 Cat.5 cables.

Are you able to ping your default gateway from both devices?

Sorry i'm still learning these stuff... Default gateway? Like, a router's IP? 192.168.1.1?

I don't understand how that would be relevant to my problem since I have directly connected my laptop to the NAS via ethernet... However, the default gateway is 'pingable' from my NAS but not from my laptop because it is not connected to it in any way.

Huh. I guess that's why I should actually read all those details. Does the windows laptop have a gigabit NIC or is it a 10/100 NIC? In the latter case you'd probably need a cross-over cable.

I think laptop has a gigabit NIC. On local area connection status it says "Speed: 1.0 Gbps". A cross-over cable? I had already connected them together before with my current cable. I even transferred files. I'm not sure why this is happening :'(
