I was wondering about the licensing too. That's why it hasn't been included in the Linux kernel in the past.

I see it as a welcome addition. The zfs on Linux guys maintained a ppa but it's great being included in the kernel. I'm hoping SLES and RHEL will now too.

It's not being included in the Kernel. Licensing prevents this. It will included as a kernel module same as it's always been done on Linux.

It's not really a new thing. Proxmox (which is a modified Debian distro) has come with ZFS out of the box for awhile now as a kernel module and even lets you to create and install the root OS to a zpool from the GUI installer wizard.

Did you read the article?

Yes...

Did you?

Code:
What does "support" mean?
You'll find zfs.ko automatically built and installed on your Ubuntu systems. No more DKMS-built modules!
$ locate zfs.ko
/lib/modules/4.4.0-4-generic/kernel/zfs/zfs/zfs.ko
You'll see the module loaded automatically if you use it.

zfs.ko is the kernel module... If it was included in the Linux kernel it would not use /lib/modules at all or require the zfs.ko kernel module...

I assure you that nobody is baking zfs into the kernel.

I apologize for my snarkiness, you're absolutely right (though you knew that) I didn't get that it was a kernel module when I first read it. I thought it was in the kernel which is why I didn't get how the licensing worked.

Sorry for being snippy. :oops:

No worries man. ZoL is my primary platform that I've used for 3 years now and I follow development pretty closely.
