SOLVED Validating flash drives?

Is there something I can run on my new flash drives to validate them/make sure they're not defective? I plan on using them for a mirror'd boot drive.

And would there be any problem uploading a config file from an earlier version of 9.3? (My config file is from 9.3 from a few months ago and I'm installing the latest stable build)

Nope, should be fine.

I still don't trust flash drives as OS drives no matter how much they are tested... :P

Should be, only issue is if your BIOS know to use USB #2 if USB #1 went belly up...

Would the bios need to know that? Wouldn't FreeNAS take care of that?

/I don't really care if the system can't boot if the usb #1 dies since I'll be replacing it immediately anyway. I just don't want to have any issues where it would cause data loss or something.

P.s. what would be a good scrub interval for my boot USBs?

FreeNAS can't take care of it if FreeNAS hasn't booted yet.

I scrub mine daily, but others say that's too frequent.

Like I said, I don't really care in that case as I'll be replacing it before I reboot anyway. I'm only concerned with having the system GUI/interface lock up potentially causing some data loss.

I was thinking something frequent like that would be detrimental to the flash drives health.

Frequent writes wear out flash storage, but I haven't heard anything to suggest that frequent reads do so. On the contrary, judging by the Samsung 840 EVO saga.

Well, I ultimately had to force a shutdown because I couldn't open the GUI, the local shell through IPMI was refusing to take input, and SSH was the same way.

I thought scrubbing also involved some writing. If it's just reading then it's not a problem. And by 840 Evo saga are you referring to how older data would become slower over time or is there something else?
